Thank You...

Thank You To everyone who has supported The Artist Within
in the last year.
Without great customers-we never could have made it through such difficult economic times.
We are doing our best to offer new and exciting programs each month to encourage and inspire creativity for both youth and adults and hope that you will also continue to tell us what you would like to see.
Our glass classes continue to be a favorite and with the addition of "walk-ins" we have seen a huge boost in the number of people trying new things.
Jeff Metzger will be adding advanced stained glass at the beginning of the new year & a lead caming class as well- watch for these.
Our after school kids classes have been alot of fun and in January we will focus on sculpture- Andrea Fox will host the 6 week session (offered at two different times)- featuring a variety of mediums and Steve Acton will be offering a Hand-building with clay class for all ages.
PMC- Precious Metal Clay, will be on the calendar as well as Journal making with Peggy McDevitt-----LOVE-LOVE-LOVE these journals !
we also have watercolors(youth & adult), acrylic portait painting for adults, and oils with Barb Sewall slated for January.
it promises to be a busy month !!
So plan to keep yourself busy & in out of the cold
Remember you can also stop in and paint-your-own-pottery
or use the studio to work on projects for a small fee !
look forward to seeing you all soon.
Happy Holidays
Kathy.

Summers End

School has started-
Fall is here-
and with that many changes in my household.
Matt always says that according to eastern philosophy, you should try to
limit your life to one major "change" per year---well, apparently noone
around here is paying attention. We have about one major change per week.
Corinne has settled in and is doing well at Miami- loves college life.
She is working at the cafeteria nearest her dorm, plans to tutor with the
"America Reads" program, and is getting on well with her roommates.
Can't ask for better than that.
Ian, also settled in well - after a bit of a rocky start - seems to really
like the program at Eastland Career Center and has met some people there he
likes as well. Looking forward to getting out in the workplace. I think he
is doing a great job there.
Shelly is happy in the 10th grade at LU-doing fine.
We don't hear from Chelsey very often, but I think she is good- and I hope
she is happy-we miss her very much.
BIG NEWS--Robby is home from the Marine Corps. Plans to start college in jan.
looks good, feels good, we are very glad to have him home !
P.S. he's looking for a job...:)

The Last Day...

Today is the last day I will have three of my children living full-time in the house.
Today is the last day that Corinne will be "under-thumb".
Beginning tomorrow-she will live at Miami in the dorms.
Exciting-yes. Bittersweet-absolutely.
Today Shelly started the tenth grade at LU.
She is the last of my kids to attend the High school full time.
Ian will be going to the career center beginning Monday.
Wow- have things changed.
I better get ready.
more changes to come.
Happy first day of school.

Back to School

It's hard to believe that it's already that time again !
Summer has passed SO quickly--seems like it just started-
and here we go again--BACK TO SCHOOL !
This year, a little different for me-
instead of 5 in school- down to three.
Corinne heads off to Miami U. in Oxford- moving into the dorm
Aug 20th for her freshman year-- GO CORI !!
Ian will be heading to Eastland Career Center for his Junior year
in the Electrical Technology Program- I think this will be a great fit
for him and he seems excited to get started on a new path.
And Shelly will be starting her Sophomore year at LU-- the youngest of
the kids and the last at the HS.
hard to believe.
The clothes have been purchased.
The supplies in the bag.
Dorm Room crammed full.
The house seems quiet.
Missing my older kids.
Missing when they were all excited to start their first day of school- new lunchboxes in tow- the coolest "light-up velcro" Disney character shoes (had to have those),taking the 1st day of school photos....
wow-
time sure passes quickly-
enjoy while it's here.
have a safe "back-to-school"-
ENJOY !

Classes at the studio are full of fun and frolick-

we now have lots of new ceramic pieces in the studio to
add your own artistic touch to-
then we will fire them for you to pick up !!
Great afternoon activity with the kids.

More classes coming for the rest of July and into August for kids, teens and Adults
in all mediums-if there was a class that you missed because of vacation (or camp...whatever) and you don't see it offered- be sure to call---we will see what we can do- or if we have something close that would be a good substitute.

Thanks to Bev Kenney and her 4-Hr's for coming into the studio to work on their fair project--we made a beautiful FUSED GLASS PENDANT - this is alot of fun.
you can try this too at our walk in on the 25th of July between (11am-3pm) $20-create a pendant.

Be Thankful

there are times in your life when -
for one reason or another-
you are forced to take a strong look at the things that are
REAL and Important.
This week we have all experienced that with the
passing of our friend Nick Byers.
As much as his death saddens all of us it also should give
cause to each and every one of us to stop and reflect about
our daily lives and experiences.
What are we really upset about ?
Why do we bicker/argue & fight ?
Why all the stress and the worry ?
What is the big deal ?
Appreciate one another- appreciate our time together-
ENJOY LIFE-
it is so often
too short.

Sympathy

Sending deepest sympathies to the Byer's family
as they mourn the sudden loss of son Nick.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you
and to the kids at Liberty Union as they
work through these next few days and struggle to
come to terms with this great loss.
Rest in Peace Nick.

Looking forward to some sunshine

So glad to see the signs of spring...
the grass is green-
the tree's are in bud-
the birds are singing-
and ofcourse all of the idiots are out driving 35mph in a 55mph zone
in the middle of the afternoon when THEY don't have a thing to do but
drive around and enjoy the sunshine.
WELL---
some of us do have JOBS.
We have to go to work.
We have places to be...and it is difficult to get there when you're
going 35mph....
Enjoy the sunshine.
Tomorrow it looks like rain.

LOTS OF NEWS!!!!!

so much is going on.....
tonite is the big opening night performance of Liberty Union High Schools
Seussical the Musical
lots of schools put on this type of performance each year--but for us -this is quite the event- I think the last time there was a musical/play/drama performed at the high school--it was atleast three- maybe 4 years ago.
so for these kids- a great opportunity. they have worked very hard and are extremely excited.
personally, I can hardly wait to shove my BIG hind-end into one of those very small, old wooden theatre seats that we have in our very out-dated auditorium.
oh yea.
and....
Robby is well- lovin' the surf and sun of Hawaii. although wished his work-time was more "military"--less "boring"-- not alot to do as a new marine until his unit returns from Afghanistan in april--then he will return with them(to AFGH) in november. but until then-- "HURRY UP AND WAIT"--welcome to the military, rob.

Ian is good. a man of few words. not much to say. healthy. happy. good.

Shelly...Shelly...Shelly...we sure do love Shelly.

Chelsey -- now 20-- made the decision to move in with her boyfriend-- and his parents. He is currently unemployed. nuff said.

Corinne just received word that she has rec'd enough scholarship/grant money to pay for her first year at Miami Univ. with $ to carryover to her 2nd-- with more interviews yet to go ! good job Cori ! now she doesn't have to stand on the sidewalk and wave at the "real" students inside the classrooms--she can be one too.

and on we go--
hope you are having a good week.
kathy.

Today

Today was a great day for family.
My oldest daughter Chelsey came home today and
Matt, Corinne, Ian, Shelly, Chelsey and I went to see
Grandma at the nursing home for lunch.
It was a really nice visit.
We laughed.
Mostly because Grandma was always talking about
something other than what the rest of us were talking about and
it made for really funny conversation-
but it was also nice to be
together even if it was for a short time.
So tomorrow is another day-
back to work and school.
Everyone is so busy.
But hopefully they will all remember
today.

Columbus Dispatch Metro/Mike Harden

A BIG Thank You to The Columbus Dispatch and Mike Harden for the wonderful column that was featured in todays paper. I really appreciate the story and the time that was spent at the studio to get to know the people and what we are about. I hope that more people realize we are here and come out and take a look-- many thanks-- hope to see you again.

OPEN MIC NIGHT

So again we celebrate the end of the month with our OMN--
the gang's all here-
the joe/joe duo pickin' the guitars --
and Savannah lighting up the room with the voice of an angel.
Andrea read some poetry--nice, nice...
some music from joe alone, and a classical piece from the little joe-
he tells me it's "Dee"-
Libby sang a gospel standard-beautifully.
--**
then-Billy and Jamiee arrive lots of fun-
they really are-
love them both-
some drummin' some singin', some guitar playin too-
all was good and then Billy ripped out his infamous
Adam Sandler lick from the Wedding Singer and i though that
the grandparents in the room were going to have a heart attack...
what can i say-
we are all aboout good taste...
Havin fun at The Artist Within.
see you next month for OMN.

Congratulations to an old friend

An old friend stopped by the studio yesterday
some of you may know her
Sandy McCabe
she was my children's preschool teacher
THE BEST ever
she is celebrating 5 YEARS CANCER FREE
If you see her
give her a hug.
CONGRATULATIONS SANDY !!
We all love you !

THANK YOU MIKE HARDEN

Yesterday- a big day at the studio-
I was interviewed by- none other than Mike Harden, of the Columbus Dispatch.
We all have read Mike's columns for years-
he writes about people and places around the state-
happenings,
things that are "off the beaten path"-
and-- yes---
he visited Baltimore-
and The Artist Within !
It was alot of fun to talk with him-
he is a very down to earth guy, shared stories of his own, photo of
his grandchildren (beautiful), and was just good company.
However, I don't think that I did so well.
The interview thing is just not for me. I always say the wrong thing
no matter what the circumstance-- and then to think that someone is actually going to QUOTE me ??!!
Dear Lord-- now we have trouble !
so when you read the article - remember please- that I am an artist-
artists tend to live in another world-
a world where sanity is rare-
reality-somewhat skewed,
and basicaly,
I'm an idiot.
Don't hold it against me....
Thanks again Mike.
Look for the article in Sundays Columbus Dispatch.

FACEBOOK---I HAVE ARRIVED !!!!

Okay---
so anyone who knows me at all, knows that I am about the most computer illiterate
person on the planet over the age of two--
still a paper and pencil kinda girl--
carrying around a sketchbook/notebook everywhere I go--
barely able to send an e-mail without, causing some kind of computer melt down that makes my husband spew out words that contain the power of a nuclear bomb.
BUT---
then...
Jeff sends me this thingy called Facebook some-kinda-crap and wants me to look at it.
that was the beginning of the end.
I am so there.
I Love this thing.
I am the person who has never felt that I would re-connect with anyone from High school- no reason- it just wouldn't happen. I have never gone to any sort of reunion or gathering. never looked anyone up.
But how cool is this !
They're all here !
it is so much fun to hear about husbands, wives, kids, jobs---LIFE !!!
They are the same---they are so different.
They are my past-
some may actually become a part of my present- future?
thanks to Jeff-
I might actually learn how to use this thing---
just a little.....just enough.

I LOVE LOLA

WHO IS LOLA ?
That I am sure is a question many of you are asking yourselves right about now.
no- not a relative or even a very good friend.
not a "movie-star idol" or singer.
LOLA is my car.
a 1994 Volvo which is completely devoted to my personal comfort.
leather HEATED seats, a sweet little moonroof, perfectly adjustable mirrors, lumbar support.....i just love LOLA.
but today LOLA had to visit the doctor- a trip to Kreager in Millersport-
tie rods, tires and a ball joint-- and a hefty bill but she was in good hands....
Dan and the guys there took exceptional care of her.
she's good as new-
and Dan owes us his best Tina Turner rendition at the next Open Mic....
need a repair for your baby--
check out Kreager Tire in Millersport-- ask for Dan-- tell him kathy sent you.
