it's C-O-L-D outside !

Call me a wimp--
but it is TOO darn COLD outside !
There is absolutely NOTHING enjoyable about the weather when it is this cold and windy !
I don't like it one bit !
the older I get--the LESS I like it.
I think I understand more, why older folks move to warmer climates...
why not ?
Why subject yourself to this unneccesarily ?
If work is no longer keeping you here and the kids are out of school and on their own-- go to the BEACH !
That's what I'm talkin' about !
Warm weather here I come !
If I ever get these kids out of the house.....
and if we ever stop working....
and if we can ever afford it.....
well....
it sounded like a good idea...
maybe i just need more blankets and some hot chocolate...
someday.....

finding my muse...

today was a very creative day for me.
i was able to take some time to work on projects that have been sitting for some time on my work-table unattended.
at first i was unable to get started and i just dabbled and moved things around- not accomplishing much of anything-
but then, as if "touched" by my muse-- i became inspired- it surprised me, and the more i worked, the more i HAD to work.
i was able to get so much done!
it felt great !
and i must say- the completed work is pretty nice too !
also a great day for business--
THANK YOU !
must have my planets in line today or something....
whatever it is - i'll take a few more like today.

Monday, December 15, 2008

REMEMBER TO TAKE THE TIME....

AS THE HOLIDAYS APPROACH-
ALL TOO QUICKLY...
REMEMBER TO TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF-
TAKE TIME TO ENJOY THE LITTLE MOMENTS WITH FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES-
ENJOY THE EXCITEMENT OF THE SEASON WITH THE CHILDREN IN YOUR LIFE-
TAKE TIME TO CATCH UP WITH FRIENDS AND RELATIVES-
ENJOY MOMENTS OF CREATIVITY AND --
REMEMBER TO RELAX.
NOTHING HAS TO BE PERFECT-
PERFECT IS FOR MAGAZINES AND MOVIES--
NOT FOR REAL LIFE MEMORIES.
NO ONE CARES IF THE COOKIES CAME FROM KROGER (INFACT, IN MY CASE IT IS PROBABLY PREFERRED....)
SO HAVE SOME FUN-
LET THE KIDS WRAP THE PRESENTS-
LET YOUR HUSBAND DECORATE THE TREE-
HAVE A DRINK -- AND BE MERRY !
HAPPY HOLIDAYS !

What does it all mean ????

With the holiday season upon us, I ponder the meaning of the season....
not a new concept to be sure--
but what does this whole Holiday season mean anyway ?
For most, it is a time to get together with family and friends--enjoy good food and company, while taking extra time off work to over indulge (in every conceivable way...), exchanging gifts--that we usually do not need nor can we afford--
BUT, all in the name of the HOLIDAYS and good cheer.
It's really not our fault.
We've been programmed this way since birth. Commercialism at it's best.
So we play along. Even though we KNOW we don't need all of the STUFF that we buy.
And even though we tell ourselves that we are going to do things differently--
here we go again...
so don't blame yourself...
don't be too hard on yourself.
just be sure to remember the true meaning behind the holidays
and---
save your receipts.

GONE A BOY-BACK A MAN

We went to Parris Island, South Carolina on Wednesday to pick up our oldest son Robby from marine boot camp.
When he left in august, he was a typical 18 year old punk, to say the least.
He knew it all-
could Do it all-
yet did little,
and certainly didn't need OUR advice or help with ANYTHING.
Gone is that kid.
We were met by a confident, mature young man Thursday morning for the Family Day festivities.
His brother and sisters were equally amazed/impressed.
Friday morning was the actual graduation ceremony-
very emotional, a very proud moment for the families of all 541 marine recruits graduating that day.
His Dad and I could not have been any more proud than at that moment.
Met other recruits,
met the drill instructors,
met other families-
met our son-
it seemed like for the first time.

Congratulations 1st Recruit Training Batallion

COMING HOME...

BRIGHT AND EARLY TOMORROW MORN, WE WILL BE LEAVING FOR PARRIS ISLAND,SOUTH CAROLINA TO HEAD TO ROBBY'S GRADUATION FROM MARINE BOOT CAMP.
I HAVE TO SAY- AS A MOTHER, I HAVE MIXED EMOTIONS ABOUT ALL OF THIS.
FIRST OFF--I AM INSANELY PROUD OF HIM FOR THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT---BUT---
THE MOMMY IN ME WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE LITTLE BOY BACK HOME.
ROBBY WASN'T SURE WHAT HE WANTED TO DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL- NOTHING REALLY
"GRABBED" HIM AND SAID "THIS IS IT"--I THINK THAT IS SO TRUE FOR SO MANY YOUNG PEOPLE-
LIFE MOVES SO FAST--HOW DO YOU KNOW ?
NO REAL IDEA--HE PICKED THE MARINE'S--
WE HELD OUR BREATH--COULD HE DO IT ?
WE KNEW HE COULD..
WOULD HE LIKE IT ?
SO FAR IT SEEMS LIKE HE HAS FOUND A GOOD FIT- SOMETHING HE REALLY EXCELLS AT AND IS PROUD OF--
AND WE COULDN'T BE ANY MORE PROUD OF THE MAN HE HAS BECOME.
YOU CAN READ IT IN HIS LETTERS-
YOU COULD HEAR IT IN HIS VOICE-
A SENSE OF PRIDE AND ACCOMPLISHMENT.
ROBBY WILL BE HOME FOR ABOUT THREE WEEKS- THEN OFF TO NORTH CAROLINA AND THEN....?
GOOD LUCK ROBBY-
YOU'VE DONE WELL.
LOVE,MOM.

Cub Scout Pack 187

Last night Cub Scout Pack 187 came to the studio to complete their requirements for their "art" belt loops. They are a really nice group of boys. I really enjoyed working with them.
We made a red, white & blue star mobile (for the "make a mobile" req.) and for the "art construction" req. we made a foam core prism sculpture that was created from equilateral triangles.
Lots of fun.
Lots of energy...
It was PERFECT.
Thank You Cub Scout Pack 187

Boo at the Zoo....

Yesterday my family and I visited the Columbus Zoo.
Happened to be -- "Boo at the Zoo" weekend - so LOTS of tots in costume-
VERY cute- my teenagers were thrilled.
The weather was perfect-the animals were scarce- the few that were visable were
asleep in the sun.
LOTS of walking-LOTS of people-
Not much else to say.
A little disappointing- our zoo is beautiful- lots of space- the animal habitats appear well planned- but where were the animals?????
Teenagers are great.
I really did like the flying fox exhibit- they were super cool- the wings were awesome. You can definately see the inspiration behind "Count Dracula's" cape and mannerisms when you watch how they use their wings to cover their face etc... it was really cool.
Did I mention that teenagers are great?
Matt and I had alot of fun.

DON'T WORRY----BE HAPPY !!!! :))

Okay--So you can't stop thinking about all of this STUFF that's going on--
come on in to the studio and Take your mind off things and work on something CREATIVE
it's a great STRESS RELIEVER and alot of fun too.
Bring a friend-
hang out-
listen to good music-
make great gifts-
you'll be glad you did !

Is it really that bad ?.....

In the face of economic troubles and all of the worries of the world, it's easy to lose sight of all of the GOOD that surrounds us each and every day.
We are such a LUCKY nation --
we live in relative safety in our homes and communities-compared to much of the world. We have the comfort of electricity, potable water, healthcare, heat and housing.
Our children are afforded a wealth of educational opportunity and we have work available, if we are willing to take the jobs.
WE need to appreciate the Good that we have- the love of our family and friends.
We need to take back the responsibility of our own happiness- learn to appreciate
what is here and now.
Be grateful for good health, good jobs and good fortune.
And when things are not quite so easy---be ready to work a little harder for the good of ALL and for the sake of our children.
We are a very blessed nation- maybe it's time we EARNED it.

Message to a friend

god dag Artilleristan-
Gratulera med dagen Till Du !
Jag hoppa det sa pass du har en under bar dag !
JAG er glad sa pass vi har gjord vannerna.

kathy.
Happy Birthday, Gunnel !

Building a new foundation

The building where we are located is an old Methodist church dating back to the early-mid 1800's.
So needless to say, it's OLD. Unfortunately-some of it's caretakers have not fulfilled their duty in terms of maintenance and have even caused considerable damage and harm to what was once a beautiful structure.
We have tried to "give back" some of what the building once had- although the original stained glass has all been stripped away, the bell is gone, the pews etc...
we're trying to put her back together again- not in the "historical" sense- but in a respectful and cared for way.
We have combined some of the old with some of the new to create a tasteful backdrop for the gallery- and I must say it's beautiful.
I think she likes it too.
The building is a "feel good place" to be.
Yesterday, we repaired the crumbling foundation-pouring new concrete walls and repaired the front entry stairs. One step at a time (literally...).
Thanks to Danny-our Hero-
for all of his efforts and help- we couldn't do it without you.

The Last Game....

Tonight was the last home football game of the season for Liberty Union High School.
This also means that it was the last Home Football game for my daughter Corinne to play in the marching band with her friends on their home field. Bittersweet. It has been so much fun watching her grow into such a wonderful young woman--but are we really ready to let go ?
As we lined up to escort our middle child across the field for her Senior Recognition- we made small talk with the other parents- all of us with the same look on our faces- could this really be ? Our babies, only yesterday-- now ready to leave for college in just a few short months....
but our meloncholy was broken by the laughter of the teenagers surrounding us- their joy apparant, as they too anticipated the months ahead and where that path may lead them.
How odd it all seemed...that we were all in that same moment and yet our experience could differ SO dramatically.
The announcer speaks "Corinne McIntire, escorted by her parents; 4 year band member, 2 year Leo club member, National Honor Society.........." ,
but all I heard was the laughter of a beautiful baby, her breath as she slept at night, tiny cries for comfort and then....
" I love you mom & dad--see ya later--Oh yea--can I have some money for food and by the way, there's a party after the game..."--
---Love you too, sweetie, love you too.

Beautiful Fall Morning....

How can we not be happy on a day as beautiful as today ?
The air is crisp, the sky-clear, the sun is shining (in Ohio), and the leaves have started their annual change from green to the most magnificant array of colors that you will ever find.
I have had worries over the last week regarding the well-being of my grandmother-my best friend. She is soon to be 92 years old. Still lives alone about a mile down the road. She lives in a retirement apartment that is nice and safe- perfect for an independant grandma like mine. We talk on the phone, I visit the apartment- so do my children, I buy her groceries and take care of her bills, Drs. and medications. But when I saw her yesterday (we spend Mondays together- usually looking at mail order catalogues), it seemed like I wasn't doing enough. Somehow I should be doing more- but I'm not sure what that would be.
We've thought about moving her into our home- but even visits on weekends here are too much after a couple of hours- we have a VERY active household-(parrotts,dogs,cats & kids). This isn't the answer.
I enjoy our time together- but she never wants me to leave- she still remembers me as the young Kate- no husband, no children, no responsibilities.
As I prepared to leave grandmas house I felt sad that my best friend is growing older and nearing the twilight hours of life- I will miss her so much, I want to spend all of the time that I can with her and yet my other obligations are so many. We walked down the hall to the front entrance and stood and looked out at the beatiful fall evening- the sky, the trees- I told her I loved her and said goodbye.

RENN FEST 2008

WE LOVE RENNASIANCE FESTIVAL !
A FAVORITE FAMILY PASTTIME FOR MANY YEARS RUNNING.
This year we were pleasantly surprised- we went on Sunday-the weekend of Scottish/Irish Celebration- LOVE THAT !
The weather was perfect- and (unlike Backwoods this year)- NEW artists-
NEW ideas- Not everything was a repeat. Sure-alot was the same-to be sure, but it was nice to see that they are still evolving and bringing in new and fresh things for those of us who attend year after year.
The shows were fun-the kids love 'em, the food- gotta have a turkey leg, and the festival enviroment- where DO these folks get thier energy ?!?!
All in all- a very nice day-
glad to have been a part of
RENN FEST 2008.
p.s. still 2 weekends left if you wanna go--- say "hi" to Ron & Tina in the "Treehouse"-WONDERFUL ARTISTS-Good people--DON'T MISS THEM !

Jane & Jean

A big congratulations to Jane and Jean on the wonderful article in the local paper on their artwork currently being displayed at the public library.
Jane Droll-is a talented quilt artist who I have known for several years and have seen her work grow into what she is creating today.
Jean Farmer-also very talented-mixed media artist, working in metal and textiles, with a beautiful display of her work as well. Also a friend.

Why can't I get local newspaper coverage I ask ?
I have sent in press releases to the paper- seems we lack local news....
I have been interviewed twice. Nothing.
I think that our story is NEWS WORTHY - new business in a town full of empty business fronts.
Restoration of an 1800's church- revitalization as opposed to demolition-good idea.
Baltimore trying to attract new businesses and ideas to the community....
Just some ideas - might make a good news story---

By the way---Jane---Jean----F.Y.I.
If you're reading this.....I hear there's a great place in Baltimore-
it's an ART GALLERY--
who would have LOVED to have been a part of your show...
Have I been SNUBBED ?
no hard feelings.
nice show.

always having fun....

So why is it that as we age, we adopt the belief that "fun" should be left behind in our youth ? I mean the kind of silly fun that you have when youre a kid. Bubbles. Coloring books. Playing with Play-dough. Slumber parties. eat dry cereal out of the box. Laying in the grass looking at the stars. Playing in the rain. Eating with your fingers and licking off the gooey stuff....thats fun... people with little kids allow themselves to have this kind of fun- but only for a little while- because all too soon, it's time to "set a good example" and teach them the rules of "how to behave". ofcourse, it is important that we KNOW how to behave. But do we have to do it ALL of the time ? Can't we ALLOW OURSELVES those little moments to just have some fun...play a little...find that little kid inside....
I'll tell you a secret...I do it everyday. I PLAY ALL DAY. It makes my husband so proud. My kids think that I've lost my mind. (I love that by the way- they're teenagers- they SO deserve it...).
With the stress and pressure in our everyday lives this is what we need to-
NO-
must give back to ourselves- the ability to PLAY- have FUN.
You'll be glad you did.

What a good time !
Open Mic Night- another great success--a BIG Thank You to Bill Hines for the PA equipment that he so generously brought in for everyone to use--thank you- thank you very much--
great performances by some old friends...OUR HOUSE BAND-- "MUDFOOT"--
joe, stephanie, jeremy and mindy--sounded fantanstic !
Savannah and Stephen sang a duet and then Savannah ROCKED THE HOUSE with "chain,chain,chain"-- you GO GIRL !
We had three new singers with us, Baylee, Gabby & Bree- a trio of angels-they really sounded beautiful together.
Bill was full of energy and ready to rock & roll and acompanied by 11 month old Leah on harmonica ( and sometimes tamborine)-
and a beautiful love poem was read and dedicated by my husband (to me...)how sweet is that....
Looking forward to next month

One World.....

so this whole "internet" thing is relatively new to me. I didn't pick up on all of this when the rest of the world did, infact, I have just recently learned how to email with any success and I can almost always find my own website...you might say I'm a little behind the times--still a pencil and paper girl. But one thing I have come to LOVE is the ability to meet new people from all over the world who share a similiar creative spirit. I met linda, who lives in Las Vegas and just sent some Beautiful desert photography on tile and ceramic (among other items) that you have to see to believe, a friend in California who is sending some fantastic mosaics our way and most recently two great ladies in SWEDEN--quilt artists, with a very unique and etheral quality to their work that is so beautiful on screen I can't imagine how it will look in person. Not only are we being blessed with the beautiful work of these people, but I have made such wonderful friends in the process- learning about their lives and their families....this really is just "one world" that we all share and for such a very short time. I am very grateful for this "new" tool that I have that lets me talk to and "meet" these great friends-I know they have enriched my life and I hope in some small way I can do the same for them.

ACOUSTIC, SONG, COMEDY, POETRY

maybe it was just me....

so maybe it was just me, but i was a bit disappointed in backwoods fest this year. alot of the "same old thing" repeated booth after booth. a few favorites were there too, a fabulous polymer clay artist from columbus, a creator of characters from hebron with a whimsical style that i love, pottery wall pockets that fill small spaces and outdoor "buildings" that light up and are a true work of art. but too much osu, painted wood plaques and purchased ready-made crafts. the food was great as usual and we spent far too much of our time (and money) eating...but that was the highlight of the day---oh and the people watching....thats ALWAYS good at the backwoods fest.

GOOD MORNING BALTIMORE!

Today my husband and I (along with best friend Dale) are headed to Backwoods Fest- a favorite annual event. Crafters/ artisans/ great food/ folk music etc... all in a natural setting in the woods. you can find this good time in Thornville just off SR 13- today is the last day- so dont delay. I'll post on the grand adventure when i return.....

Goodbye Ike !

WOW ! this bad weather thing really sucks !
I can tell you this- i would never have made it "way-back-when", or with the Amish. Don't get me wrong, I am in no way a girly- girl type or anything like that but not having electricity- BAD....I LIKE my hot food hot. I LIKE my cold food cold. I LIKE to take comfortable showers with a light ON. (unless it's that one time a year and my husband and i decide... oh wait -- this isn't that kind of website is it ?!)I LIKE air conditioning---YOU KNOW what i mean....
my kids were fighting, my dogs were whining, I was miserable....and that was just in the first 6 hours....man oh man---we would be in BIG trouble if there was a REAL emergency....well...the way i figure it, not much to worry about at my house- we'll all kill each other before the food goes bad and we die of starvation.....
THANK GOODNESS FOR ELECTRICITY. GOOD-BYE IKE !

CONTEST!!!!!!!

For the next 2 weeks, I will be reading any and all blog postings to the ARTIST WITHIN (with the help of my WEBMASTER) and choosing a winner of a fantabulous prize.....WHAT? you might ask? hmmmmmm....
That is yet to be announced....let the posting begin...(p.s. i'm lonely...)

Is there anybody out there?....

Is anybody out there?......
I know this whole "Art Gallery" thing is a new concept for Baltimore but we are an up and coming community and we owe it to ourselves to enjoy some of the "nice" things about being Americans- the chance to express ourselves freely whether in art, music, poetry, dance, comedy/theatre, writing,or speech. By allowing ourselves these freedoms of expression we also encourage the next generation of "creative thinkers"- those people who will not be afraid to stand up and speak the truth and stand up for what they believe in. I personally feel that art is a conduit for that very thing- the ability and strength to rise above and sometimes stand alone, allowing others to scrutinize your innermost thoughts and desires- right there on a canvas- or paper or in song- for the whole world to see. So Baltimore- be strong, be brave, be CREATIVE- do it for yourself and for your community. There is an ARTIST WITHIN all of us.

Growing up...

Laast night I took the girls to the mall after I closed the shop for the day.
Corinne was shopping for her class ring-to include the notable accomplishment of National Honor Society with a lovely artificial amethyst set in silidiam (sp?) whatever that is. Also on the shopping list, more shoes, a new purse from Pac-Sun, band T-shirts, and various homecoming accessories.
Michelle, AKA Shelly, was also ready to tear up the place with birthday money burning a hole in her pocket and plans for her first homecoming dance.
So---a beautiful little purple and black number was found at Deb-(I never looked this good in a dress-EVER) with allof the proper accoutraments-shoes, shawl, purse, earrings, necklace, hairbands, nailpolish, etc, etc....
and everywhere we went, shelly explained taht this was her "first high school dance".
I'm thinking she's a little excited.
Then more money spent at Hot Topic and ofcourse we had to eat....
one last stop on the way home at McDonalds-the walk from the mall door to the car was a killer- for a McFlurry and finally we were home to share the spoils of the trip with Dad---who looked surprisingly well rested and relaxed-in stark contrast to what I was feeling as we arrived.
But as the girls showed off thier purchases I did detect a bit of meloncholy in Dads eye- his little girls are growing up-and fast...

There's a new girl in town....

so----I had MY first bellydance class yesterday....yes, that's right, me. anyone who knows me, (and hasn't stopped laughing),understands what a stretch this truly is. What a blast! Really, it was alot of fun- a BIG workout- I didn't quite expect all that AND I had a really good time. Tamarra and I laughed our way through it all- she laughed WITH me, not AT me......and it was over before I knew it. I am sure that I'll do it again soon. Thanks Tamarra.

Summers End....

School has started, Friday night football games, homework, early morning school buses, packing lunches, lost books.... and all the other great things that go along with it. Bittrsweet for me this year. Two of my children have graduated and a third is in her senior year. (just leaves two more to go in high school). But what i do love about this time of year in our area are the changing leaves on the trees. Beautiful colors that can only be provided by nature--no matter how we try as artists, we are never able to fully reproduce the brilliance that is right in front of us. So take a minute out of your hectic life-put the kids in the car, take a drive, take a walk, go look at the trees. You'll be glad you did.

George was especially interested in the handmade kaleidascope by Clif Wayland.
The visit was unfortunately not long enough, but really nice just the same.

POPULAR DEMAND........

Due to popular demand......our fall offering of classes will be expanding GREATLY--we will be adding courses in sculpture, glass painting, fused glass, direct method mosaic, stamp carving, more mixed media, jewelry, watercolor method, etc.... so STAY TUNED for more info....be sure to stop in and check the class info board or look at the class offerings here on the website. LOTS going on at THE ARTIST WITHIN.

Baltimore Festival & Parade....

Another Festival comes to an end....the parade was bittersweet for me this year--the last year that our daughter Corinne will march in the band. They did an awesome job ! My two younger children don't play in the marching band but we have certainly enjoyed the years with our older kids marching ( corinne/ flute, Robby/ drums ), so for us it seems like the end of an era.... One thing we really enjoy is the terrific turnout that the residents of Baltimore give to the festival parade--chairs line main st. saturday evening in anticipation of the big event, we had a wonderful vantage point from the studio this year and enjoyed greeting all those who visited after the parade as well. Baltimore is small town living at its best, thanks to the people who live here. good times for all. until next year.......

08-08-08

08-08-08 ----kinda cool....won't happen again in our lifetimes.....
i personally like the number "7". seven people in my immediate family (matt, myself, five children ), seven is a good number , seven days in a week, many strong biblical references to the number seven, seven works for me. eight is good too.
seven plus one....
so anyway...today joe, our guitar instructor will marry his fiance' amy at 8:08pm,
very cool.

CONGRATULATIONS JOE & AMY !

they like eight....

New Class Info Page

Altered Books 101

another great class! this workshop was so much fun ! we really had a great time exploring the "altered" art concept and everyone had such great vision for their own unique creation. i think that is my favorite part--watching the books take shape and seeing the individual ideas emerge. by the end of the day the books were fantastic and i think a couple of folks were a bit surprised by what they had accomplished...it really is what "art" is all about. thanks for creating with me--fora anyone who missed this chance-- watch for "ALTERED BOOKS 101 " on next months calendar--i'll post todays photos as soon as i figure out how...:(

Great Things Are Happening....

Things are happening quickly at The Artist Within and we couldn't be happier ! This weeks toddler class was alot of fun. The kids had a great time and the parents were glad that they were painting at the studio and not at home! so it was a great success ! Our "Decorative Paper Techniques " class was great. We went over nearly a dozen new paper techniques and created enough papers to fill a small scrap ( if you chose) plus a cover. it was a blast. The guitar and vocal lessons are both taking off, and everyone is excited about their progress--what a fantastic week! Thank you Baltimore ....you artsy fartsy folks you...
